Batik making in Arusha
Hi, I'm back (Loic). We spent some time visiting an organization outside of Arusha called the United African Alliance Community Center. They work with orphans. The art teacher showed us how to make a batik and this is how you do it.
How to Make a Batik
Materials:
Camping stove and pot
White fabric
Different color dyes (use black at the end)
Paintbrushes
Sponges
White candle wax
Stencil
Instructions:
1. Choose a stencil (which is cut out of cardboard)
2. Measure stencil on fabric and cut fabric to size
3. Choose background colors
4. Take sponge and apply background colors on piece of cloth
5. Wait about 40 minutes for cloth to dry
6. Take out camping stove and pot
7. Take white candle wax, break it in half and take out string
8. Turn on camping stove; put pot on camping stove
9. Put candle wax in pot and melt
10. Place stencil on cloth
11. Take paintbrush and dip it in the hot wax
(CAUTION: Don't knock pot over or flick the brush as wax is HOT!)
12. Brush candle wax around surroundings of stencil and everywhere else on the cloth (but not under the stencil)
13. Peel off the stencil
14. Get sponge and black dye ready
15. Put black dye where the stencil was (it's okay if it goes on the wax)
16. Wait for black dye to dry
17. Once it is dry, crumple up the batik to loosen the wax
18. Then use a hot iron to remove wax (CAUTION: do not use steam with iron!)
19. Peel back the paper
20. Now you have a batik !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
